Blog post 6 – Discourse Community.

The only discourse community i remember being in is a soccer club community. I never knew this could be a discourse community till now. It amazed me and it’s really cool getting to learn new things like this which connects back to memories in past. In Swales’s text he defines discourse community into six different characteristic, which helps the audience, including myself have better understanding of the claim he’s aiming to make. Every discourse have different goals set, but one common goal for every community is to achieve the goal they’ve set for themselves.

For the club i was in, the goal we had set for ourselves was to win the championship, keep on being competitive and improve our play day by day. The communication was the most important factor to achieve that goal. We needed to communicate on the pitch and outside the pitch. We had to communicate using the field language in the pitch. Language such as ; man on, to your left, through ball, cross, shoot, don’t be fancy, run back to cover your position, cover his position on the left/right if he goes up high, tackle, slide tackle, etc.
