Blog Entry 3: Rhetorical Situation.

Bitzer defined rhetorical as a natural context of persons, events, objects, relations and an exigence which strongly invites utterance. I define rhetorical situation as a plan or an action taken to achieve a set goal. Bitzer uses many examples of rhetorical situation to prove his definition. One of the example he used in his text is ” pollution in the air”. he said that because it requires positive modification because to get rid of the pollution that would be a positive change.

Bitzer goes on to saying that rhetorical situation is defined by it’s characteristic. He also bring up some terms like Exigence, Audiences and constraints.

  • Exigence: an emergency, either immediate or persisting, it is the controlling feature of the situation and is what the rhetorical situation revolves around.
  • Constraints: The conditions of the audience which also influence their decision making.
  • Audience: The point of the rhetoric is to bring about a change towards the exigence. By rhetoric, the instilling of certain ideas in the minds of the audience is the only way for them to function as mediator of change.

Rhetorical situations can be audiences, speeches and simple thoughts. To me rhetorical situation is any kind of problem with solution we go through. It just has to be expressing in a right way to a right person or take right action to solve the situation.
